The local SEO checklist: 40 steps, in order

Local SEO is a long list of small things done consistently. This checklist puts them in the order I'd do them for a new client, from the Business Profile to AI search, and links each one to the guide that explains it. Work through it top to bottom, then repeat the monthly section.

The short answer

  • Start with the Google Business Profile: verified, the right primary category, every service listed and accurate hours.
  • Reviews are the habit that compounds: ask every customer with a direct link and reply to every review.
  • Your website needs a page for each service and each main area you serve, with consistent business details and LocalBusiness schema.
  • Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence. Everything on this list feeds relevance or prominence; distance you can't change.

Google Business Profile (1 to 10)

  1. 1Create or claim the profile: getting on Google Maps
  2. 2Verify it: verification guide
  3. 3Business name exactly as on signage, no keywords: Business Profile FAQ
  4. 4Most specific primary category, plus relevant secondary ones: categories
  5. 5Address shown, or hidden with service areas if you go to customers
  6. 6Local phone number answered during listed hours
  7. 7Every service listed with a short description
  8. 8Description under 750 characters: description checker
  9. 9Photos of the team, work and location, added monthly
  10. 10Website link tagged with a UTM link

Reviews (11 to 16)

  1. 1Make a direct review link and QR code: review link generator
  2. 2Ask every customer, the same way, right after the job: getting more reviews
  3. 3Send customers the steps if they're unsure: how to leave a Google review
  4. 4Reply to every review within a day or two: responding to reviews
  5. 5Report reviews that break policy: removing a review
  6. 6Stay within the FTC rule and Google's policies: reputation management

Your website (17 to 26)

  1. 1One page per service, with price ranges and what affects them
  2. 2One page per main town or area you serve, with real local details
  3. 3Name, address and phone the same as on the profile, in the footer
  4. 4LocalBusiness schema matching the visible details
  5. 5Titles and descriptions written for clicks: snippet preview
  6. 6Fast on mobile: check PageSpeed Insights
  7. 7Tap-to-call and a short contact form near the top
  8. 8Answer-first guides for common questions: AI Overviews
  9. 9Internal links from guides to the matching service pages
  10. 10Search Console and Analytics connected: free tools

Listings and links (27 to 33)

  1. 1Bing Places claimed, ideally imported from Google
  2. 2Apple Business Connect claimed: free listing sites
  3. 3Yelp, Facebook, Nextdoor and your industry's directories
  4. 4Same details everywhere; fix duplicates: local citations
  5. 5Links from suppliers, partners and associations: local link building
  6. 6Local sponsorships and community involvement that earn mentions
  7. 7No paid link packages or bulk directory submissions

AI search and tracking (34 to 40)

  1. 1Check what ChatGPT says about your business and category: getting recommended by ChatGPT
  2. 2Allow AI search crawlers you want: robots.txt generator
  3. 3Search your key questions in AI Mode and note who's cited
  4. 4Track calls and forms as conversions
  5. 5Note where each new customer heard about you
  6. 6Review Business Profile performance and Search Console monthly
  7. 7Repeat the review, photo and post steps every month
