- 3
Paste the final version into your Business Profile under Edit profile, then Description.
What Google allows
The description is up to 750 characters. Google's guidelines don't allow URLs, phone numbers, prices or promotions, all-caps or gimmicky characters, or content about another business. Descriptions that break the rules are rejected or removed.
How to write one that works
The description helps customers decide and helps Google and AI tools understand what you do. A structure that works for service businesses:
- Start with what you do and where, in plain words
- Name your main services and who you serve
- Add one or two proof points: years in business, licenses, specialties
- Keep the first 250 characters strong, since that's what shows before "More"
Does the description affect rankings?
Google has said the description doesn't directly change local rankings. Categories, reviews, proximity and your website carry far more weight. It still matters for conversions and for how AI assistants summarize your business, so write it for customers, not keywords.
Frequently asked questions
How long can a Google Business Profile description be?
Up to 750 characters, including spaces. Around 250 characters are visible before the "More" link.
Can I add my website or phone number?
No. Those have their own fields, and adding them to the description can get it rejected.
Should I add keywords?
Use the services and areas you actually cover in natural sentences. Stuffing keywords doesn't help rankings and can read as spam.
Is my text stored?
No. Everything runs in your browser.
