Google AI Mode: what it is and what it means for your business

AI Mode is the conversational tab in Google Search. Instead of ten blue links, people get a written answer with a handful of cited sites, and they can keep asking follow-up questions. Searches for it have grown fast, and the businesses it cites get a small number of very interested visitors. Here's how it works and what you can do about it.

The short answer

  • AI Mode is a tab in Google Search that answers with an AI-written response and links to supporting sites. Google says it suits multi-step questions, comparisons and follow-ups.
  • It uses "query fan-out": running several related searches at once, which lets it link to a wider set of sites than a classic results page.
  • Google says there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet; normal SEO applies.
  • Clicks from AI Mode and AI Overviews are counted in Search Console under the Web search type, so you can't separate them there yet. Track leads on the landing pages instead.

What AI Mode looks like

Google AI Mode answering how often a water heater should be replaced, with cited sources from a manufacturer, a retailer and a local plumbing company
AI Mode for "how often should a water heater be replaced", October 2026. The answer cites a manufacturer, a big retailer, a marketplace and a local plumbing company's own blog (name blurred). Small businesses can be cited next to big brands.

The answer comes first, with small source chips after each claim and a panel of cited pages on the right. Below it, a box invites the next question. People who use it tend to ask several questions in a row, which is why the sites it cites often get visitors who already know what they want.

Interest is climbing quickly: national searches for "google ai mode" went from about 90,500 a month in October 2025 to 1.5 million in September 2026 (DataForSEO).

How AI Mode chooses the sites it links to

Google's documentation on AI features says both AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a "query fan-out" technique: issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to build the response. That's why a single AI Mode answer can cite pages that wouldn't all rank on page one for the original question.

  • Eligibility: the page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. There are no extra technical requirements.
  • Relevance to a sub-question: a page that answers one part of the question clearly, such as cost, lifespan or warning signs, can be pulled in for that part.
  • Different models, different links: Google notes AI Overviews and AI Mode may use different models, so the links can differ for the same question.

What to change on your site

  1. 1Answer sub-questions directly. Break service pages and guides into clear sections that each answer one thing: cost, how long it takes, signs you need it, repair or replace. Put the answer in the first sentence of each section.
  2. 2Use real specifics. Price ranges, timelines, sizes, warranty terms. AI answers lean on concrete facts, and vague marketing copy gives them nothing to cite.
  3. 3Keep important content in text. Prices hidden in images or PDFs are hard to use.
  4. 4Link related pages together so Google can find your page on each sub-topic.
  5. 5Keep business details consistent across your site, Business Profile and directories.

Local intent still matters. For "plumber near me" style searches, Google still shows the Maps pack, so your Business Profile remains the main lever. AI Mode matters most for the research questions people ask before they're ready to call.

Measuring AI Mode traffic

Google says traffic from AI features is included in Search Console's Performance report under the Web search type. There's no separate AI Mode filter there today. What you can do:

  • Watch the pages that answer research questions for changes in clicks and impressions
  • Track calls and forms that start on those pages in Analytics
  • Search your main questions in AI Mode monthly and note whether you're cited
  • Check Bing Webmaster Tools' AI performance report for Copilot citations, which shows a similar trend on Microsoft's side

Frequently asked questions

What is Google AI Mode?

A conversational tab in Google Search that answers questions with an AI-written response, links to supporting websites and lets you ask follow-up questions.

How do I get my website into Google AI Mode?

Google says there are no special requirements beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet. Pages that answer specific sub-questions clearly with real facts are the ones most likely to be cited.

Is AI Mode the same as AI Overviews?

No. AI Overviews appear at the top of regular results when Google thinks they help. AI Mode is a separate tab built for longer, multi-step questions. They may use different models and cite different links.

Does AI Mode reduce traffic to websites?

It changes it. Fewer people click for simple facts, but the sites that are cited tend to get visitors further along in their decision. Measure leads, not just clicks.

Can I see AI Mode traffic in Search Console?

It's included in the Web search type of the Performance report, but there's no separate AI Mode filter yet.
