- 2
Add your main keyword to see it bolded the way Google highlights matching words.
- 3
Edit until both bars are green, then copy the final text into your CMS.
Why pixels matter more than characters
Google cuts titles by width, not by character count. A title full of wide letters like W and M gets cut sooner than one with narrow letters like i and l. This tool measures your text in the same font Google uses, so the preview matches what searchers see far more closely than a character counter.
As a working guide, keep titles under about 580 pixels (roughly 55 to 60 characters) and descriptions under about 920 pixels on desktop (roughly 150 to 160 characters).
How to write a title that gets the click
Your title is the biggest lever on click-through rate. What works for service pages:
- Lead with the service and the place: "Emergency Plumber in Austin, TX"
- Add one proof point if it fits: "24/7", "Licensed & Insured" or "Same-Day"
- End with your brand name, separated by a pipe or dash
- Write one unique title per page, so pages don't compete with each other
Google may still rewrite it
Google rewrites titles and descriptions when it thinks another part of the page answers the search better. Clear, accurate titles that match the page's H1 get rewritten far less often.
Frequently asked questions
What is the ideal title tag length?
Aim for under about 580 pixels on desktop, which is usually 55 to 60 characters. Put the most important words first in case it gets cut.
What is the ideal meta description length?
Around 150 to 160 characters (about 920 pixels) on desktop. Mobile shows slightly less, so put the key message in the first 120 characters.
Does the meta description affect rankings?
Not directly, but it affects how many people click your result, and a clear description sets the right expectation for the visitor.
Is my text saved anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.
