- 3
Download llms.txt and upload it to the root of your domain, so it opens at yoursite.com/llms.txt.
What llms.txt is
llms.txt is a proposed standard: a plain Markdown file at the root of a website with a title, a short summary and links to the pages that matter most. The idea is to give AI tools a clean, curated map of the site instead of making them work it out from menus and footers.
Be realistic about the benefit
No major AI provider has confirmed that it reads llms.txt when answering questions, so treat it as a low-effort extra rather than a ranking factor. What gets a business recommended by AI assistants is the same thing that ranks in Google: clear service pages, real proof, consistent business details and mentions on other trusted sites.
Writing the file is still useful. It forces you to decide which pages best explain your business, and that list is a good brief for your internal linking.
What to include
Keep it short and factual. A good llms.txt for a service business lists:
- Your main service pages, with one line on who each is for
- Location or service-area pages
- Two or three case studies or proof pages
- Your pricing, FAQ and contact pages
