How to use the URL Slug Generator
- 1
Paste your page titles, one per line.
- 2
Choose hyphens or underscores, whether to drop filler words and a maximum length.
- 3
Copy the slugs into your CMS. Check each one still reads naturally.
What makes a good URL slug
The slug is the part of the URL after the domain that identifies the page, like /tools/url-slug-generator. Google shows it in results and people read it before they click, so it should say what the page is about.
- Lowercase, with hyphens between words (Google treats hyphens as spaces, not underscores)
- Short: the main keyword and little else
- No dates or numbers that will go out of date
- No accents, spaces or special characters
- Stable: changing a slug later needs a 301 redirect
Should you remove stop words?
Dropping words like "the", "and" and "for" makes slugs shorter, which helps when titles are long. Keep them when removing them changes the meaning or reads oddly: /how-to-get-more-reviews reads better than /get-more-reviews in some cases.
Frequently asked questions
What is a URL slug?
The readable part of a URL that identifies a specific page, such as "url-slug-generator" in ranktactix.com/tools/url-slug-generator.
Should I use hyphens or underscores?
Hyphens. Google reads hyphens as word separators but treats underscores as joining words.
How long should a URL slug be?
Three to five words is usually enough. Keep it under about 60 characters.
Can I change a slug after publishing?
Yes, but add a 301 redirect from the old URL so you keep its rankings and links. The 301 redirect generator writes the rules for you.
Is my text stored?
No. Slugs are generated in your browser.
